I think robotics will be a part of routine surgery in 3–5 years, specifically through highly interactive assisted platforms. The software, at present, is arriving faster than the hardware.
However, with clinical trials and academic lab research underway, I believe it is just a matter of time before the hardware will be able to achieve the same dexterity and skill as humans.
I would suggest the robots are already being used in routine ophthalmic surgery -- some of the advanced phacoemulsification devices which auto regulate intraocular pressures, the laser devices with eye tracking, or grid laser.
Whereas, tele-operated robotics maybe 6-7 years to see wider uptake, especially in the UK/ Europe.
